If you are living in the Netherlands as an expat, the inburgering exam is something you will likely need to pass.
The good news is that you are already surrounded by the language every day. With the right structure and consistent practice, you can progress much faster than you might expect.
We have helped many expats successfully pass their inburgering exam. In some cases, learners even reach A2 level in as little as 2 months.
What is the inburgering exam?
The inburgering exam is designed to ensure that expats in the Netherlands can:
- communicate in Dutch
- understand Dutch society
- function independently
The exam is organized by Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO).
What do you need to pass the inburgering exam?
Dutch language skills
You will be tested on:
- reading
- writing
- listening
- speaking
The level is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Important: for many expats, B1 is becoming the required level instead of A2.
| A2 | B1 | |
|---|---|---|
| Who? | Started integration before 2022 (Wet inburgering 2013) | Started in 2022 or later (Wet inburgering 2021) |
| Level | Basic Dutch: simple conversations and everyday situations | Intermediate Dutch: more complex conversations and independent communication |
Knowledge of Dutch society (KNM)
This part focuses on practical knowledge, such as:
- daily life in the Netherlands
- healthcare and education
- work culture and communication
Orientation on the Dutch labour market (ONA)
Not everyone needs to complete ONA.
If you have worked in the Netherlands, you may be exempt. You may qualify for an exemption if:
- you worked in the Netherlands as an employee
- you have worked at least 6 months in the past 12 months
- you worked at least 48 hours per month
If this applies to you, you may not need to take the ONA exam. However, you must apply for this exemption yourself.
If you are not exempt, you will need to:
- create a portfolio
- understand how the Dutch job market works
- reflect on your work experience and future goals
How fast can you pass the inburgering exam?
Your progress depends on:
- your starting level
- your motivation
- how consistently you study
- whether you follow a structured method
Many people assume it takes 6 to 12 months, but that is often the case with unfocused or irregular study.
With intensive practice, self-study, and the right guidance, much faster progress is possible. Some learners reach A2 level in as little as 2 months, especially when they study consistently and actively practice speaking Dutch in their daily life.
If you are looking for a structured approach, our Dutch language courses for expats are designed to help you prepare for the inburgering exam efficiently.
What happens after you pass?
After passing the inburgering exam, you can:
- apply for permanent residency (if eligible)
- apply for Dutch citizenship
- feel more confident communicating in Dutch in daily life and at work
Passing the exam is not just a legal requirement. It also opens up new opportunities and helps you feel more at home in the Netherlands.
